Floratam St. Augustine (Scientific name: Stenotaphrum secundatum) is a vigorous, coarse-textured variety engineered for outstanding performance in full sun and warm climates. Developed by the University of Florida and Texas A&M in 1973, Floratam is recognized for its broad blades, deep green color, and strong resistance to St. Augustine Decline (SAD) and other common turf diseases.
This variety thrives in well-drained soils, tolerates drought moderately well, and excels in hot, humid environments, especially in coastal regions where salt levels are higher. Floratam requires full sun and is not shade tolerant, making it ideal for open lawns, wide landscapes, and sun-drenched properties across the South.
